Ask Rogelio – David Bisbal and his Curly Celebrity Hairstyle

David Bisbal is a popular latin singer with curly hair known in the US for having sung with Miley Cyrus, K Naan and Jessica Simpson. His curly hairstyle and mane has inspired one of Manly Curls readers and Rogelio gives him tips and advice to emulate David Bisbal’s awesome mane of curly hair!

Dear Rogelio,

I have a few questions I would like to ask you. My hair is now like 5 cm extended and it’s Type III but the sides are puffing and the top of my head is growing pretty much up (short and tight). The sides are very curly and puffy and so is the back.

Question1: If I want the medium length curly hair of David Bisbal do I need to cut the sides and back after a while? It looks like his hair only grows from the top of his head and then hangs down (without having long hair at the sides).

Question 2: Do I need to trim or just wait?

Question 3: How long it will take to achieve the same length? I am worried it will fail with my hair growing puffier (my hair is extremely thick).

Thank you!

 Brahim (The Netherlands)

Dear Brahim,

David Bisbal certainly has a curly mane to inspire anyone, which is why he has been portrayed at Manly Curls before, I am very picky with which inspirational men with curly hair go through the editorial and are published!

What I can see here is that you need more length, first and foremost. Then, you need to understand how your hair will grow during the awkward phase that all of us men with curly hair have to grow through to grow our curly manes. First, let’s show the rest of our readers the photo that you are referring to:

David Bisbal is a curly hair men and he has sung with Miley Cyrus

I can totally understand why David Bisbal’s curly hair inspired you, Brahim!

For your Question 1, David Bisbal here has a medium length curly hairstyle which is similar to the Jim Morrison hairstyle. What Mr. Bisbal has done is allowed for all of his curls to grow to about 5 inches of visible length, which comes to a bit over 12 cms. Once he reached this medium length for his curls, he then trimmed slightly both the back and sides by about 3/4 inch (2 cms) to level it all off.

For reference, this is how David Bisbal’s curly hair was looking when he was growing it all to the length of the picture that inspires you:

David Bisbal grew his curly hair from short and all around to achieve a diesel medium length mane!

With regards to you Question 2: Wait it out. Once your curly hair has reached about 5 inches, then reassess and proceed to trim as I mentioned above. Once your hair is 5 inches in length, it will start to hang down instead of puffing out so until you get to 5 inches, your curly hair will be in an awkward phase in which it will be merely puffing out. Patience, brother, your hair will start hanging down like David Bisbal’s once you reach this length. Oh, and remember, this is visible length we are talking about and not the extended length I use in my curly hair measuring guide!

Lastly, for Question 3: For a Type III curly haired male, and bearing in mind you have 2 inches of extended length (5 cms) already, I estimate that it will take you about 8 to 12 months to get the same curly hairstyle as David Bisbal. In fact, I rather you go for 12 months since, by then, you will have enough curly hair all around to trim where necessary in the back and sides. Take it easy and see this as a journey, eventually you will get to your desired curly length and be sporting a super mane of curly hair like David Bisbal, I guarantee that.

All the best.

    Hey There,

I have similar kinda hair albeit on the drier side. I have been trying to grown my curls as well for a while now. Now, from the front things are fine and the length is actually past my eyes and when I pull them down they kinda go past my nose.

I have a problem with the way my hair grows from the back though. Firstly, I get that V-shape at the back, meaning there’s some hair growth in a straight line at the center of neck while from the 2 side, the length decreases from center to the ears(hope I am able to convey the message). Also, there’s a lot of bunching up of hair from the back which really makes the hair look short at the back. I am pretty sure it’s not an awkward stage and actually a bad shape as 2 months back I had really long curls and yet this shape persisted. I had to trim coz of some real bad split ends :-(

I have visited good salons but they just trim it and yet can’t give the proper shape.

What can I do to atleast prevent the bunching up of hair? Also, how should I style my hair to make them look like David Bisbal?

PS- I started growing my hair to make them look like Jim Morrison, then switched to Adrian Grenier and then finally David Bisbal :-p
