Wavy hair is curly hair. Waves are a type of curly hair but not everybody knows this. If your hair is not straight, it is curly and men with wavy hair need to understand the implications of too being a curly haired male.
Most men tend to be confused about their hair and this is very much so when it comes to knowing what type of hair they have. Wavy hair is, indeed, curly, but one needs to also be aware that curly hair can be expressed in several ranges, including wavy hair.
Specifically, curly hair comes in 5 types of shapes, which I have termed Type I, Type II, Type III, Type IV and Type V. Two of these types are what are known coloquially as wavy hair (Types I and II), thus, wavy hair is curly hair. My proposed 5 types of curly hair for men go from what is considered wavy to coiled curly to kinky curly. At the end of the day, all aforementioned types are curly and they are differentiated by the shape of the curl, hence the range I have come up with.
By all means, there are other hair typing methods around but all of us conclude that wavy hair is, indeed, curly. My take on this is that if the hair doesn’t grow in a straight pattern, it is then curly. As straightforward as that, because hair which is not straight will curve in different ranges as it grows out of the hair follicle. In fact, the dictionary definition of “curl”, as a verb, is “to form into a curved shape” and that is what non-straight hair does precisely, albeit in different degrees or Types.
Hugh Grant has curly hair, albeit a Type I which is what is known commonly as wavy hair
Antonio Banderas is another celebrity with Type I curly hair
My rule of thumb is that if your hair bends or curves within 3 inches of length, you have curly hair and not straight hair. I don’t have anything against straight hair, I think it is just as awesome as curly hair, but the way to manage the latter is different than that of the former. My rule of thumb is imperative to know so as to identify exactly what type of hair one has and how one should take care of it. Straight hair does not have the same hair care requirements as any of the types of curly hair, so with my hair typing guide you get to know what you need to know to grow a manly mane. That simple.
Adrian Grenier has Type II curly hair which is popularly known as wavy hair too
When most people think of curly hair, they have a ringlet curls image in their minds. Certainly, hair which is in ringlets is a type of curly hair (Type III) but as the shape of the curly hair tightens or loosens up within the aforementioned 3 inches of length, curly hair can then be considered a different type of the curly hair spectrum.
Justin Timberlake has Type III curly hair commonly known as ringlets
Justin Guarini is another male celebrity with Type III curly hair
I have gone in details about all the types of curly hair in my Manly Curls Guide to Curly Hair Types so do read it and identify your curly hair type. To make things simple in this article however, you should be aware of the following 5 points concerning curly hair men:
1) Wavy hair is curly hair
2) If you hair curves in any form within 3 inches of length, you have curly hair.
3) Curly hair comes in 5 types: Type I, II, III, IV, V, as per the Manly Curls guide.
4) Each type of curly hair can be addressed with colloquial names such as wavy, ringlets, coiled or kinky.
5) Knowing your hair type will help you understand more about your mane!
So, absolutely YES, wavy hair is curly hair and those men with wavy hair should start addressing their curly hair as we do here at Manly Curls. For those men with waves, their manes can be styled with a wide range of hairstyles for wavy hair that will make them stand out and carry their wavy, and thus curly, hair proudly.
