Curly Hair Men Talk – Rodney from Washington

Today on Curly Hair Men Talk, it is my great pleasure to bring you another Manly Curls dude. Just like the rest of us, Rodney is all about great curls, smarts and coolness. He has been an MC follower since the very beginning of times and when I had the opportunity to feature him, I didn’t think twice for it is an honor to have people like Rodney reading us!

Name: Rodney

Location: Washington, D.C. by way of ATL.

Hair Type: Type IV

Introduce yourself!

I’m a chemist working on top-secret projects in preparation for the end of the world….no, really. Otherwise, I’ve been growing my hair since ’06 due to the lack of a decent barber. The journey was full of messy transitions and experiments, but the curly locks are the envy of many. (Editor’s Note: Rodney was the first dude I met with the same mane awesomeness as Troy Polamalu!)

How do you care for your hair?

Long Type IV hair is a gift and a curse. Daily washing (easier to comb while wet), the occasional deep conditioning, bi-weekly shampooing and leave-in conditioners do the trick. Yes, it does take some maintenance, but the end product is worth it.

Weirdest hair moment?

Initially, I didn’t know what type of style I wanted to settle with. Attempted dreadlocks (for a total of 5 minutes), cornrows, excessive gel-based products, but the most regrettable would be the plats. More or less, they’re a type of braid, but with my short, curly hair, they tended to unravel at the ends. So, I had individual rubber bands on the ends of each one. The final result had me looking like an awkwardly tall Kris Kross.

Favorite hairstyle or haircut?

My current, long flowing curls. I wouldn’t rock it unless I loved it. I do, however, miss my high and tight look, occasionally.

One tip for a better lifestyle:

In three words, wash hands frequently. But really, responsible exercising is the best solution. Similar to learning, the more you use your muscles, the stronger they become, the longer you live, the better you look. So, exercise and wash hands frequently…seriously.

Favorite place you have been to in the whole world:

Shibuya / Roppongi, Tokyo, Japan.

You have just built a time machine, what time period in history are you visiting?

I’d love to be the one guy that found El Dorado and lived to tell about it (minus the malaria) if such a thing ever existed. Unselfishly, I suppose I’d want to go back and attempt to stop the mass exportation of my ancestors. However, if Aston Kutcher taught us anything, things happen for a reason and America, along with so many other countries, wouldn’t be as great as they are today.

Casual or formal wear?

Easy, formal. When you look good, you feel good.

For your shaving, razors or clippers?

Both. Razors for the short hairs. Clippers for the trim and long ones.

One celebrity with a mane you are inspired by:

Troy inspires many a man, but I’d be in denial if I didn’t aspire to have Lenny Kravitz’s mane at one time.

One celebrity you’d go dining with:

Salma Hayek has had me on a leash since I first saw From Dust til Dawn…but she is almost 50 now. Eh, no regrets, it’s still on my bucket list. (Editor’s Note: Rodney is a man of great taste)

One celebrity you’d punch in the face:

Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather. One, he’s too cocky. Two, just to have the street cred to say, “I did it”, after I got out the hospital.

Chuck Norris vs Batman. Who wins? If it’s at night, Batman. If in Texas, Norris. I don’t see the hype with Chuck. He DID lose to Bruce Lee.

Gym or outdoors exercising? Outdoors. Ideally, fresh air trumps a sweaty gym any day.

One song for an enjoyable evening: R. Kelly – Feeling On ‘Yo Booty. Can anyone really say they didn’t have a good night after listening to this? Ok, maybe one person.

Manly Curls is… the light at the end of the tunnel.

Final words?

Take heed of the guru’s tips. Rogelio has done his research and knows what he’s talking about. That and wash your hands. (Editor’s Note: Rodney knows his stuff so guys, wash those hands! Thanks for the words Rodney, it is an absolute pleasure to have you on board!)
