Curly Hair Men Talk – AJ from New Jersey

Today on Curly Hair Men Talk, I bring you AJ, a fellow cool blogger who specializes in the Jewfro hairstyle (as in, that’s all he blogs about). Because he is spreading the curly hair word and because he doesn’t take his hair too seriously, he is today’s inspirational curly dude!

Name: AJ

Location: Jersey Shore

Hair Type: Type I

Introduce yourself!

I’m a lifelong resident of the Jersey Shore, and have yet to pump my own gas. I work as a writer for a public relations firm by day, and I’m an aspiring author and blogger by night. And I have a Jew-fro.

How do you care for your hair?

I keep it pretty simple – wash with basic shampoo. Before going out, I just wet my hair with water, which tightens up the curls, and shape my hair with my hands. Once dry, everything’s locked in place.

Weirdest hair moment?

A couple of years ago when my hair was at its longest, I let my girlfriend use her straightening iron on it. I was so used to having my hair piled up on the top of my head – having it hang down was such an unusual experience.

Favorite hairstyle or haircut?

Don’t really have a favorite, but I do enjoy changing it up. Every now and then, I’ll shave my head down to the scalp; within two months, my hair is back to its curly self. (Editor’s Note: I hear you on that one!)

One tip for a better lifestyle:

It’s a cliché, but I fully subscribe to the idea of getting off the couch and doing something. I had been overweight most of my life, but finally started exercising a few years ago. I’ve lost more than 50 pounds since then. My only regret is that I didn’t start working out sooner.

Favorite place you have been to in the whole world:

I was in Greece last year and loved everything about it – the scenery, the history, and especially the food.

You have just built a time machine, what time period in history are you visiting?

If the 1970s were anything like what you see in Boogie Nights and Three’s Company, I’m totally there. (Editor’s Note: count me in!)

Casual or formal wear? Casual. Suits are only for weddings and job interviews.

For your shaving, razors or clippers? Razor.

One celebrity with a mane you are inspired by: Seth Rogan – he makes nerdy, chubby guys with curly hair look cool.

One celebrity you’d go dining with: Anthony Bourdain – I’d love to hear his crazy stories and he’d know exactly what to order.

One celebrity you’d punch in the face: Jimmy Fallon – seeing him cry would be the first time he ever made me laugh.

Chuck Norris vs Batman. Who wins? Batman, easily. I think some of those Chuck Norris facts might be a tad exaggerated.

Gym or outdoors exercising? I’m equally happy running on the treadmill as I am hiking or running around outside.

One song for an enjoyable evening:

My favorite song at the moment is Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros – it’s the perfect soundtrack to sitting outside on a warm night with a cold beer.

Manly Curls is… the best site on the internet addressing the needs of the curly-haired gentleman.

Final words?

Your hair won’t last forever, so have fun with it while you can. Grow it out, do something crazy, or, as I did, use it as inspiration for a blog.

(Editor’s Note: AJ combines a humorous view on hair with a plethora of real life jewfros on his site so check it out for some entertaining reading but before, like/tweet/+1/link ‘cos you too are a part of spreading the word, fellow curly dude/dudette!)
