Usher Grows Kinky Curly Hair in Afro Hairstyle

Usher has grown his kinky curly hair in an Afro hairstyle recently for the movie Hands of Stone where he will play boxer Sugar Ray Leonard. Check out the pictures of Usher’s new hairstyle in this article!

Usher grows a new Afro hairstyle to portray Sugar Ray Leonard in upcoming movie

Usher, aka Usher Raymond IV (born October 14, 1978), is currently finishing growing an Afro and the other day surprised everyone at the ball for the Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation in New York by turning up rocking his ‘fro like a bossman. I had already spotted Usher growing his kinky hair some months ago and wondered why he was growing a different-than-usual hairstyle from the one he has us all used to (i.e. a short buzz cut with a shaped up hairline). Back then, Usher had a Teenie Weenie Afro (TWA), which is a small Afro hairstyle in its earlier growth stages and that has the hair (usually Type V curls) trimmed to an evenly-shaped style so that the hair can then grow into a full Afro hairstyle. I was already suspicious of his hair-growing intentions, and then I saw the recent pictures of Usher will the full-grown Afro and proved to myself, once again, that I’m a hair geek (and as if I didn’t know this already). Here’s how Da Usher looks:

Usher grows his Afro for a new movie

The reason for Usher growing his curly Afro is no other than to portray boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard in the upcoming movie, Hands of Stone, a movie that will be based around the life of another boxing legend, Roberto Duran Samaniego (the movie is estimated to be released in 2014). Sugar Ray Leonard was known for wearing his afro-textured hair in a medium length, evenly trimmed to the shape of the Afro hairstyle, just like in the picture below of himself:

At the aforementioned event, Usher also sung a couple of his songs and simply rocked his Afro like a Sir, looking quite happy with his new hairstyle. Usher doesn’t usually grow his hair out; he just trims (shapes up) the hairline or sometimes gets a short Temple fade haircut. Usher’s hair usually looks like this:

Not the first time actors change their hairstyles

Usher is not the first actor to have changed his hairstyle for movie roles; I already covered how Bradley Cooper used rods to perm his hair curly or how Christian Bale and Jeremy Renner also dramatically transformed their hair. In the case of Usher, he has gone back to the 1970s Afro, a popular black men’s hairstyle of the era. I’ll now leave you folks with some more pictures of Usher’s new Afro hairstyle below, and, if you’re curious to see if you too could pull an Afro like Usher has, then hesitate no more and grab my book, The Curly Hair Book, and get your ‘fro rocking in no time!

Best,
